Penne is a classic pasta shape.  Tubular, fairly short, with diagonal cut ends similar to a fountain pen, it is one of the most versatile pasta shapes available. The word penne comes from the Italian penna, for quill or feather.  The "rigate" tells you it has ridges rather than a smooth surface.  Originally from the Campania region, it is served everywhere.

Use penne for all your pasta dishes.  Easy for children because of the short size. Particularly fantastic with pesto or marinara, in salads or baked, it is the essence of versatile.
